Things To Do In Asuncion In Paraguay

By Jonny Blair

This is a list of the 5 best things to do in Asuncion, Paraguay.

People talk about places like Rio, Buenos Aires and Cuzco when they mention South America. They don't often mention Paraguay. Which is why it's an excellent option to go off the beaten track and visit Asuncion. It's an inspirational city and contains a lot of charm. Get over to Asuncion and check it out.

1. Go to South America's First Railway Station

I love trains, but you'll be waiting a while if you want the next Paraguay to Bolivia service to leave Asuncion. Rather than relegate this train station to history's dustbin, the Paraguayans have opened it as a museum. You can get on an old train and reminisce.

2. The Argentina Border and Slums

There's nothing like a bit of simultaneous country viewing and Paraguay sits directly opposite Argentina. So much so than at various points you can stare over at Argentina. You'll need to be in and around the slums to get a decent vantage point. And while this isn't recommended at night, I must admit I loved it by day. Asuncion's port is so untouristy, you'll be mistaken for a native before you open your mouth. Although you can see Argentina from Asuncion, I mut mention that I came into Paraguay from the other side. I got a bus from Ciudad del Este.

3. "Do a Chilavert"

If you want to see a massive football stadium where history was made then head to Estadio Defensores Del Chaco in Asuncion, Paraguay. It's a great stadium and players like Santa Cruz and Jose Luis Chilavert have played here. Paraguay have been impressive in a lot of recent World Cups and this is their home venue. It's well worth checking out and a bus from the city centre can take you there.

4. Heroes Square (Plaza de Los Heroes) and Asuncion's Buildings

Paraguay has a lot of soldiers and army and also some political history. Heroes Square is worth a visit to get your fill of this. It's a massive monument to remember those who died in the war.

Then have a walk round and admire the other buildings in Asuncion such as the Palace, the Cathedral, the Army building and the old style skyscrapers.

5. A Night Out

Asuncion is relaxed and a totally amazing spot for some beers and drinks at night. You will be surprised at how many cool bars and pubs there are in and around the streets. Some bars even brew their own beer and live music is often played. Asuncion at night is a fantastic place to party.
